Swollen Ankles and Feet while traveling

Long flights may get you where you want to go, but they can be tough on the body.

From dry eyes and skin to stiff muscles and swollen feet, many travelers dread their next trip.

Edema (swollen ankles and feet) is a common condition caused by inactivity combined with the position of legs and feet during a flight- most people sit with feet on the floor.

While not a serious condition when it lasts a short time, edema may increase the risk of blood clots.

To prevent edema, try moving around regularly during the flight. Walking forces blood upwards as leg muscles contract and push against gravity.

Rotate ankles while seated and wear elastic support hose.

Untreated foot problems can be more than just a momentary nuisance. They can develop into complicated conditions with serious consequences, so be sure to treat your feet with specialized care.

At Dali Clinic, you’ll find we’re as concerned about the health of your feet as you are.

If your feet are suffering because of unexplained swelling, disease, skin or nail conditions, injury or hereditary problems, we invite you for an appointment for personalized care.
