Sciatica

Sciatica is a pathology that affects a considerable part of the population and, in may cases it's extremely disabling.

The pain of sciatica is typically felt from the lower back to behind the tight and can radiate down below the knee. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the lower back and extends through the buttocks area to send nerve endings down the lower limb. The pain of sciatica is sometimes referred to as sciatic nerve pain.

While sciatica is most commonly a result of a lumbar disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can produce the symptoms of sciatica. Sciatica causes pain, a burning sensation, numbness or tingling, radiating from the lower back and upper buttock down the back of the thigh to the back of the leg. The result is lumbar, buttock, hip and leg pain. It can also lead to difficulty in walking or other movements of the leg.

According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the proper flow of energy and blood circulation must be achieved to restore the balance within the body and cease the pain. This particular pathology will involve the stimulation of the bladder and gallbladder meridians and the strengthening of the energy of the kidney, as they are the organ related to the lower back. The procedure aims to remove the stasis by unblocking the stagnation caused by the compression.

Generally treatments such as acupuncture and tui na massage are used to relieve this condition.
